Whale Spotting in Puerto Vallarta
March 3rd, 2008

Each year from mid-December through the end of March, the waters off the coast of Puerto Vallarta offer some of the most spectacular whale watching in the world - and right now we are at the height of whale watching season in the Bay of Banderas.

It is extremely difficult to predict the habits of these magnificent marine mammals, but if there are whales in the bay, Vallarta Adventures Tour Company wants to make sure you witness this awesome site.

The company is flying high and sends special scouts into the skies. The bay is big and the tour boats are small, so the best way to find the whales is by plane. Vallarta Adventures is the only tour company in the Banderas Bay area with a spotter plane. Every day spotters hit the skies looking for whales from the light aircraft, taking care not to disturb the whales or follow any of the pods.

"We take off from the marina and fly toward Nuevo Vallarta and start looking at the shore and then we fly out about two miles over the open ocean and return to the coastline, making lines from the shore to the ocean," says Pilot Irving Sanchez, "If we find a pod then we fly in circles high above the animals and we talk over the radio to the boat captains and tell them where the whales can be found."

It takes a good eye to spot these magnificent mammals of the deep. "We look for the whales every morning for about 40 minutes. We scan the entire bay in that short amount of time. I then communicate to all the company boats and relay the exact position of where the whales can be found," says Ricardo Sanchez, Spotter. "I have a grid map with squares on it and the boat captains have the same map. For example I can tell them there is a group of eight whales in square 14 and a group of two whales in square 11."

The constant radio contact with the many Vallarta Adventures whale watching vessels will greatly increase your chances to experience nature on a whole new level.

Vallarta Adventures is a promoter of "best practices" for whale watching in the Bay. All of Vallarta Adventures' whale watching excursions are guided by exceptionally talented marine mammal behavior experts who are passionate about respecting and protecting the wildlife and the environment, and hope that through their efforts and conscientious whale watching practices they can give everyone a deeper understanding and appreciation of Banderas Bay's "Gentle Giants."

The 2008 Whale Watching season wraps up on March 23rd, so don't miss this fantastic opportunity to enjoy an intriguing look into the "wonderful world of whales." For more information or to make your reservations click HERE or call 1-888-303-2653 toll-free from the U.S. or Canada.
